About the Meta Tag Builder

Meta tags are HTML elements in the <head> of a page that tell search engines and social platforms what the page is about. The title tag and meta description appear in Google search results as the headline and snippet. Open Graph tags control how the page appears when shared on LinkedIn, Twitter/X, Slack, and WhatsApp.

Title tag rules

Keep titles under 60 characters to avoid truncation in SERPs. Put the primary keyword near the front — Google often rewrites titles that are too long, too vague, or stuffed with the brand name. A good pattern: [Keyword] — [Qualifier] | [Brand]. Example: Custom Software Development — UK Firm | ruxox.

Meta description rules

Stay under 155 characters. Write for humans, not robots — Google ignores keyword density here. Include a call to action and a concrete benefit. The description is not a ranking factor but it affects click-through rate, which does influence ranking indirectly.

The canonical tag tells Google which URL is the "master" version of a page when the same content is accessible via multiple URLs (e.g., with and without trailing slash, with UTM parameters, or via www and non-www). Set it on every page even when there is no duplication — it prevents accidental indexation of parameter variants.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does meta description affect Google rankings?
Not directly. Google has confirmed meta descriptions are not a ranking factor. However, a well-written description improves click-through rate from search results, which does influence how Google perceives page quality over time. Write descriptions that accurately describe the page and encourage clicks.
What is the Open Graph protocol?
Open Graph is a set of <meta property="og:..."> tags originally developed by Facebook that control how a page appears when shared as a link on social media and messaging apps. Platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter/X, Slack, iMessage, and WhatsApp all read og:title, og:description, and og:image to generate link previews.
Should every page have a unique title and description?
Yes, always. Duplicate titles and descriptions are a common technical SEO issue that can cause Google to choose the wrong page to rank for a query, or to merge pages in its index. Use this tool to draft unique tags for each page before publishing.
What image size should og:image be?
The recommended size for og:image is 1200×630 pixels (1.91:1 ratio) at least 600px wide. PNG or JPG. Facebook and LinkedIn crop to 1.91:1; Twitter/X crops to approximately 2:1 for summary_large_image cards. Keep important content within the centre 80% of the image to avoid cropping issues.
